£5.00 – £9.99 £1.00
£10.00 – £99.99 12.5% of the face value

Purchase fees are non-refundable.

⚠️ Not all businesses or organisations accept postal orders. Please check with the recipient before purchasing.

🔒 Postal Orders are not insured against loss or theft. Keep your receipt safe.

🔐 For fraud prevention and security reasons, transactions may be refused if identity, entitlement or payment verification requirements are not satisfied. Certain transactions may require additional checks at branch discretion.

⚠️ A postal order may be refused (and retained) if it has any erasures or alterations, is cut or defaced, or fails Post Office Ltd system validation. This is why a crossed order is recommended where possible.

✍️ Crossed vs Uncrossed Postal Orders

This is the part people most often get wrong, so here’s the simple version:

Crossed Postal Order
Has two straight vertical lines passing through it, just off centre (added electronically so it cannot be cashed in branch). It cannot be cashed over the counter – it can only be paid into the recipient’s bank or savings account, or used to pay bills. This is the safer option if you’re posting it. Our branch team can cross your postal order when you buy it.
Uncrossed (Open) Postal Order
Has no crossing lines. It can be cashed over the counter (cashed at our counter) by the named recipient with valid ID. More convenient, but treat it like cash – anyone presenting it may be able to cash it.

When buying, tell us whether you want the order crossed or uncrossed. If you’re unsure, ask at the counter and we’ll explain which suits your situation.

📄 Common Uses for Postal Orders

  • Sending money securely through the post
  • Government applications and forms
  • DVLA and passport applications (check the recipient still accepts postal orders)
  • School or college payments
  • Rent or deposit payments
  • Payments where cheques or cards are not accepted
  • Paying someone who does not have a bank account

Postal orders look and work a lot like cheques, but you do not need a bank account to buy or use one – a safer alternative to sending cash in the post, and widely accepted by official bodies. Please note: cheques are not accepted as payment for buying postal orders — please bring cash.

⚠️ Not all businesses or organisations accept postal orders. Please check with the recipient before purchasing.
